SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft successfully departed the International Space Station, carrying four astronauts back to Earth. The crew includes NASA astronauts Wilmore and Williams, who were Stranded due to a malfunction in the Starliner spacecraft, as well as NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov.
Wilmore and Williams initially traveled to the space station on June 5, 2024, aboard the Starliner for its maiden crewed test flight. The Starliner was slated to return on June 14, 2024, but propulsion and helium leak issues forced an uncrewed return, leaving the astronauts in space for over nine months.
Hague and Gorbunov joined the space station on September 28, 2024. During their mission, the astronauts conducted numerous scientific experiments and technology demonstrations. These included studies on space microbiology, the effects of the space environment on human health and plant growth, and research on new satellite materials.
NASA continues to monitor weather conditions in the splashdown area to ensure a safe return of the Dragon capsule.
