Bitcoin (BTC-USD) slipped toward the lower edge of its recent range as global markets took a breather from this week’s risk rally. The cryptocurrency fell as much as 3.1% to below $108,000 before trimming losses, reacting to the Federal Reserve’s decision to cut its benchmark rate by 25 basis points to 3.75%4%. It was the second straight reduction, but Chair Jerome Powell’s warning that further cuts were far from certain cooled the optimism that had fueled speculative assets. Traders were quick to pull back, reading Powell’s tone as a signal that the central bank could be pausing to reassess economic conditions.

Some investors, however, saw the divergence between crypto and equities as a telling shift. While technology stocks rallied on easing expectations, Bitcoin didn’t follow. Powell’s comments created a bit of risk-off sentiment, said Charlie Sherry, head of finance at BTC Markets. Add in the TrumpXi meeting stirring markets today, and, unsurprisingly, you get some volatility. The comment came as U.S. President Donald Trump met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, describing the talks as amazing and unveiling a deal to halve fentanyl-related tariffs on Chinese goods effective immediately.

Still, the market’s mood remained cautious. Treasury yields and the dollar climbed after Powell’s remarks, while futures markets now price only about a 60% chance of another rate cut in December. Augustine Fan of SignalPlus noted that strongly differing views among Fed members, coupled with a data blackout from the ongoing government shutdown, could keep policymakers on hold. Nick Ruck at LVRG Research said Powell’s tone caught traders off-guard and erased recent gains, adding that Bitcoin traders are likely watching $107,000 and $100,000 as the next key levels if the current weakness deepens.
