Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced at the Saudi-U.S. Investment Forum that the company intends to bring its Robotaxi platform to Saudi Arabia, marking Tesla’s first confirmed expansion of autonomous vehicle operations outside the U.S. Musk highlighted a $600 billion investment commitment between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, which includes Tesla’s Robotaxi project in the region. Although no specific timeline was provided, Tesla plans to launch the Robotaxi platform in Austin, Texas, in June.
Musk described future cars as “robots on wheels,” expressing enthusiasm about deploying autonomous vehicles in Saudi Arabia. Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) suite is still under regulatory scrutiny, but the company is expanding globally, having recently entered the Chinese market earlier this year. Plans to expand into Europe are also underway, pending regulatory approval from EU agencies.
The Robotaxi platform is versatile, allowing any Tesla vehicle capable of unsupervised full self-driving to be part of the fleet. This requires collaboration with local governments to first introduce a regulated version before transitioning to an unregulated FSD platform, aiming to establish a widespread Robotaxi network.
Tesla’s relationship with the Middle East is growing, as evidenced by the recent launch of the Cybertruck in Saudi Arabia and the approval of Musk’s Starlink for maritime and aviation use in the country.
