Commodity Trading Political Analysis

I'm a sophmore in college currently dipping my toes into commodity trading. I study the political side of trade between major powers (Russia, India, China) at a good university. I've been looking for internships for commodity trading, but it seems everything requires a quantitative background. Is there any position that someone who is more knowledgeable about local politics and the nature of sanctions, international relations etc… that I could fill? Or is a background in finance/math required?
