Ideal CV for getting a job in commodities

Hey everyone,

I'm wondering what skills and extracurriculars might increase your chances of getting started in commodities and if there's any chance of getting some experience outside of the classical roles?

Like, if you want to work on Wall Street it's simple: Trade your own book, participate in trading/fundamental analysis competitions, or join the investing club of your university. Same goes for Venture Capital: Start a small company – doesn't matter if it fails – to show you know the process and get the spirit.

But what's the equivalent for commodities? Can't just ship some crude or soybeans obviously, and given the industry, there's not really a community to network like there is for business or finance (that I know of).

First things that came to my mind were:

• Given the international environment, speaking multiple languages (maybe french and spanish would be relevant)?
• Programming (probably more relevant for trading than general commercial roles)?
• Experience with commodity derivatives (even if you don't want to work in trading, might signal that you did your homework + have an idea how the industry works)?
