Microsoft announced that it will no longer be the exclusive cloud service provider for OpenAI but will retain a “first buy” option under the new cloud service agreement. The tech giant initially secured exclusive cloud service rights when it invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019. Despite this change, Microsoft will continue its collaboration with OpenAI to develop supercomputers within data centers to train OpenAI’s models.

Microsoft emphasized that it maintains the exclusive rights to resell OpenAI models on its Azure cloud platform and reuse OpenAI’s intellectual property in its own products. Additionally, both companies have agreed to extend their current partnership agreement through 2030.
