How is buying a future buying something in the future when you pay upfront for it?

When you buy a future cash comes out of your pocket in the beginning not on expiration. So why is the definition buying something in the future?

From investopedia:

Futures are derivative financial contracts obligating the buyer to purchase an asset or the seller to sell an asset at a predetermined future date and set price.
